Frederick Douglass (1818 - 1895)
Abolitionist who was born a slave but escaped to the north in 1838. A self-made intellectual, he decried the ignorance and bigotry of a slave society and won many adherents to the anti-slavery cause. LIFE magazine considered him #55 on its list of "The 100 People who Made the Millennium."
