Plot Summary
This series chronicles the adventures--in the air and on the ground--of the
men of the 918th Bombardment Group of the U.S. Eighth Air Force.
First commanded by irascible General Frank Savage--and later by
Colonel Joe Gallagher, the son of a Pentagon General--the Group is
stationed in England, and flies long-range bombing missions into
German-held Europe. Characters based on the novel,
12 O'CLOCK HIGH, by Beirne Lay, Jr. and Sy Bartlett
Summary written by Marg Baskin {[email protected]}
Series Synopsis-from TV Guide Fall Preview Issue 9/19/64
12 O'Clock High (based on the movie) will take all flyboys back, especially
those who served in the 8th Air Force in England. There are the scenes in
the briefing rooms, with the maps all around, where the G-2 stands up and says,
"OK, you guys, this is it"; and the general atop the tower waits for the
squadrons return, saying he'd "rather be up there any day, than down here
sweating it out." And the other general says "you know Frank, that you are
not expendable." The pricipals - Robert Lansing (87th Precinct), Frank Overton,
John Larkin of the soap operas, and Lew Gallo - make it sound believable.
They are helped by the authentic settings and props - the pubs, the down-to-earth GI
costuming, the footage from actual World War II combat, and B-17's, P-47's, and
other aircraft of the day. "Off we go..." Debut: ABC, Sept. 18.
