Art directors and special effects people have found Richard Heffner to be a life saver while filming in Charleston. Heffner humbly explains, "I just do what people ask.Their imagination gives me a starting point and then I begin to visualize and solve fabrication problems." Heffner can replicate anything, but his forte' may be creating exacting dummy musical instruments from Stratovarius to Steinway. Maybe his gift is building precision scientific instrument panels - or window displays for Charleston's finest merchants.
We talked to Heffner on a Sunday morning in his scene shop at the historic Footlight Players Workshop where he began serving as Scene Designer/Technical Director in 1989. On this morning, while completing a corporate display just before the 3 o'clock matinee of I Hate Hamlet, Heffner shared his vision of the future "A fabrication shop for movies, commercials, theatre, and video projects. I'm particularly fond of molding, casting, and creating armature figures for stop animation."
Are we getting close to the definition of renaissance man yet?
