Ragged Dick (1867) Literary character
"Ragged Dick: or Street Life in New York" was the first of Horatio Alger's "rags to respectability" novels that appeared serially featuring moral tales for youth. By the last installment a Boston publisher signed Alger to a contract that led to 118 other novels modeled on the same archetypal plot.
